AirLabs: Combining Precision Air Quality Monitoring with E Ink Clarity

Networked Artifacts, a Switzerland-based startup is all set to launch its first offering, Air Lab, a handy and portable air quality monitoring system which you can carry anywhere you go. As Hackster.io reported, the device features an E Ink display having 296 x 128-pixels resolution that offers sharp visuals. The device comes packed with sensors that measures various environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, CO2 and such.

A nice thing with the Air Lab is its compact dimensions while still offering a comprehensive sensor suite that makes it a truly mobile Air Lab. There are two air sensors onboard along with an NXP FXLS8974CF accelerometer, a capacitive touch controller, along with a dedicated real-time clock.

The air sensors that the AirLab comes with are Sensirion AG devices. There is the SCD41 which measures the amount of CO2 present in the air, along with temperature and humidity. Additionally, an SGP41 measures volatile organic compound (VOC) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) levels present in air.

It comes with an ESP32-S3 SoC at its core along with two types of air sensors. It supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (Low Energy). It also comes with an USB port that can be used for communicating with the device. That can be like programming or debugging the device, besides charging the batteries. The battery lasts 7.5 days of active usage or 4.5 years when it is turned off.

The AirLab can be used for monitoring the air quality where it is placed. It can show the sample history and will provide you alerts when it detects any abnormality in the air constituents, besides marking specific events as well. Networked Artifacts said they plans to publish the open-source hardware under an MIT or Apache license.

The Air Lab measures 155 x 65 x 10-millimeter in dimensions and weighs just 50 grams. It can be hanged on the wall or made to sit on a shelf. The integrated stand at the back will also let it sit on your desk as well. With a black anodized aluminum build, the device is quite robust too.

The Air Lab is right now listed on the crowdfunding site CrowdSupply where it has so far raised $25,215 out of the goal of $30,000. It has garnered the support of 58 backers so far and 14 days are still left for the campaign to end.
