Just a few weeks back, I had mentioned MagInk – an innovative power bank which comes with an E Ink display built in that is set to make its debut on a crowdfunding platform soon. Now, as NotebookCheck reported, MagInk is now available on Kickstarter, where 22 backers have already pledged $1,791 with 36 days to go. The goal is set at $5,000, and at this rate, reaching that figure seems quite feasible.
The price for one unit of the MagInk Basic model has been set at $49. That makes for an outright 50 percent discount over the original price of $98. The Basic model is made of PC + ABS material and comes in three color options – black, slate, and white. The Pro version, on the other hand, is priced at a higher $89 against an original price of $178. It is made of aluminium and offers a premium feel. The aluminium build imparts higher strength and durability.
Apart from the build material and a varied color option for the Basic version, both are otherwise largely the same. They have the same 5,000 mAh capacity, sport the same 4-color 3.5-inch e-paper display having 600 x 360 pixels resolution. That translates to a pixel density of 200 DPI, which is quite decent, it must be said. Shipping is slated to begin in November 2025.
The powerbank supports wireless charging of up to 15 watts and wired charging of up to 22.5 watts. While 5000 mAh might not be too respectable a figure when it comes to power banks – even smartphones these days come with larger batteries – it still can be enough to juice up your phone when in dire straits. It can even be used to charge both your smartphone and smartwatch at the same time.
The MagInk Pro justifies its Pro branding with additional features such as compatibility with Apple Find My or Find My Device on Android. So, just in case you end up losing the MagInk, you can trace it back easily using the location tracking services mentioned above.
The company also offers an app that will let you customize what appears on the E Ink display. It can be anything, from an image, a pattern, a reminder, a to-do list, and so on. In fact, the possibilities are endless. That E Ink display consumes zero power while holding on to an image is a huge positive. There is very little power drawn when the image changes. That way, the presence of an E Ink display will have a negligible impact on the overall power consumption.
