Train travellers in Japan can look forward to a more intuitive way of receiving railway information in the coming days. According to the website Invidis, plans are currently underway to install e-paper displays at various railway stations for enhanced passenger convenience. The e-paper display in question is the Sustainable Board that E Ink had earlier announced it had developed in partnership with the advertising agency Oricom.
The Sustainable Board e-paper displays are going to be installed as OoH media. Each Sustainable Board display will comprise four individual E Ink Spectra 6 panels that are arranged together to create a ‘larger, videowall-style display surface’. As is the case with E Ink displays, there is zero battery drain as long as the image remains static. There is only a small amount of power that is drawn when the image changes.
One advantage of the Sustainable Board is that it can operate with power drawn from an integrated system. This makes for a clean and simple installation process with no wires present. Or, it can also be connected to alternative power sources such as solar power. This ensures the display can be installed even in those places where there is no easy access to a power source.
The Sustainable Board is based on an E Ink Spectra 6 display, which supports six colors – black, white, yellow, red, blue, and green. It uses dithering technology to create bright and saturated full-color images that have excellent readability and wide viewing angles. While it typically has a refresh time of around 19 seconds, that is hardly an issue when the display is being used for advertising purposes in public spaces.
Oricom said it will be marketing the product under its brand Mirapale. It plans to promote the Sustainable Board display as an environmentally friendly advertising solution and will be targeting companies with that positioning. Places where the display may find application include corporate receptions, lobbies, showrooms, commercial centers, and tourist destinations.
