Modos initially shot to instant stardom with its ambitious promise to launch two different E Ink products, a monitor and a laptop, both featuring an E Ink display. At one point, the laptop drew the most attention, given that it was being touted as the first ever laptop to feature an E Ink panel. While both are still a work-in-progress thing, the company, as Good e-Reader reported, has gotten into something else; it is now offering an E Ink monitor development kit.
The kit includes the color e-paper display along with the logic board. The e-paper display panels come in two different size options – 13.3 and 6 inches. The display controllers being offered happen to be the same as those that go into the making of its monitor and laptop projects. It promises a fast 60 Hz refresh rate and a low-latency display with dithering options.
The company had also previously promised multiple refresh modes, allowing users to choose the most suitable option based on the type of content. These modes typically range from high refresh rates with reduced display quality to lower refresh rates that deliver significantly improved image clarity. The monitor is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems and can be connected via both HDMI and USB.
There is no monitor enclosure included in the kit, which means buyers will have to create their own custom enclosures. This shouldn’t be much of an issue, considering that the development kit is aimed at developers and tinkerers. They can refer to all the custom software and source codes from the Modos’ GitHub page, including the hardware design files as well as the FPGA gateware source code.
The development kit is set for launch on Crowdsupply on July 20. No pricing information has been mentioned so far. Stay on the watch for more information on this.
