E Ink Dual-Screen E-Reader Offers Book-Like Reading Experience

Here is one e-reader device that is unlike any currently available in the market. It happens to be a dual-screen device packing two separate E Ink displays side-by-side. Unfortunately, it isn’t from any of the mainstream e-reader manufacturers. Rather, it is the creation of a DIY artist who posted the developments on Reddit, and the results are amazing; it must be said.

From what is known so far about the dual-screen e-reader concept, it features two 5.83-inch E Ink panels. Similar to a paper book, the e-reader folds along the middle and opens to reveal the two independent e-paper displays. What is also unique is that the e-reader comes with a pair of 1,300 mAh batteries, which the creator claims can last more than a month on a single charge.

Making up the core of the e-reader is an ESP32S3 chip that is known for its extreme power efficiency. For instance, it consumes just 7 µA of power in deep sleep mode. This, together with the 512 KB of internal SRAM and up to 8 MB of external PSRAM, ensures that the display functions optimally. There is also an SD card slot for storing all your e-books and other reading material.

The e-reader measures 16 mm in its closed state, with each side measuring 8 mm in thickness. Further, one of the inherent benefits of a foldable e-reader is that the display remains protected and safe while traveling. Physical buttons present allow for ease in navigation, while there is also a USB-C port that ensures the batteries get charged soon enough.

Things, however, are far from being promising on the software front. The e-reader right now runs a very basic software and is relying on off-the-shelf custom code for many of its tasks. So, while it is still a work-in-progress thing, the creator did mention there are plans to further develop the e-reader and maybe even launch a crowdfunding campaign in the future as well.
