Select Kindle Models Getting New Software Update

Amazon has released a new software update that will be available to some select Kindle models only. It is the update version 5.18.3 that has just been released and would apply to only the 11th and 12th gen Kindle, the Kindle Colorsoft, and both the latest and previous generation Kindle Scribe.

The latest Kindle Paperwhite is not in the list of eligible devices, which is quite surprising considering that the usual Amazon policy has been to roll out updates simultaneously for all recent Kindle devices. As the e-Book Reader Blog stated, the 10th-generation Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle e-readers continue to run software version 5.18.1 even though both qualify for new updates through 2026. The Kindle Oasis runs version 5.18.2, and though it has been discontinued, Amazon is committed to providing updates to the device through 2028.

Coming back to the update itself, Amazon has once again kept the details under wraps. The release note does not reveal much, except that the update includes performance improvements, general enhancements, and bug fixes. The Kindle Scribe, however, gets the Active Canvas – Move feature. Here, you will be able to move any Canvas simply by long-pressing on it and moving it anywhere you want to place it.

The update is being rolled out in phases. It might not be available to all Kindle users around the world right away. However, you can check if it has been made available in your region by going to the Software Update section in your Kindle and checking if it is there. Otherwise, the software will download and install automatically while the Kindle is in sleep mode.
