New iReader Ocean 5 Family of e-Reader Devices Launched in China

iReader held an autumn launch event recently and announced the Ocean 5 series of e-reader devices, comprising of the standard Ocean 5 e-reader, Ocean 5 Long-life, Ocean 5 Pro, Ocean 5C featuring a color display, and the Tango 2.

Here is a brief introduction of each of the devices:

iReader Ocean 5 Pro

This happens to be the flagship of the line. It comes with a 7-inch E Ink Carta 1300 monochrome e-paper display, having higher clarity and contrast compared to the prior generation e-reader. It boasts of ‘fast-refresh 3.0’ and iClean 2.0 technology, which allows for a higher refresh frame rate and dynamic ghosting reduction for a more immersive reading experience.

Providing the juice is a 2400 mAh battery, which iReader said is good for 71 hours of reading and several days of standby time. The Ocean 5 Pro continues with the same ergonomic asymmetric body design first made famous by the Kindle Oasis. The thick spine that also hosts the physical page turn buttons serves as a nice placeholder for holding the device and reading comfortably, even for long periods without tiring your arms.

The Ocean 5 Pro is priced at 1799 Yuan, which comes to around $253 USD.

iReader Ocean 5C

It comes with a 7-inch Kaleido 3 color e-paper display with 300 PPI B/W and 150 PPI color resolution. It boasts of custom color mapping technology, iColorful 2.0, and new screen-drive improvements that are aimed at smoother color transitions and reduced color ghosting. It also supports ‘iReader Pencil’ for on-screen note-taking. iReader Pencil offers 4096 pressure levels and a high sampling rate for a natural paper-like writing feel.

The iReader Ocean 5C is priced at 1799 Yuan ($ 253 USD), with the iReader Pencil priced at an additional 299 Yuan ($ 42 USD).

iReader Ocean 5 (standard)

This can be considered the entry-level version. However, it features the same basic design and looks, including the 7-inch black-and-white E Ink Carta 1300 display having 300 PPI resolution. The only major difference here is that it comes with a 2000 mAh battery and is priced at 1599 Yuan ($225 USD).

iReader Ocean 5 Long-life

As is amply evident, this happens to be the power optimized variant with claims of longer endurance times. There is mention of it having 93 hours of reading and up to 50 days of standby time. Launch price is 1399 Yuan ($197 USD).
