Bigme B13: The World’s First Portable Color e-Paper Monitor

The Bigme B13 is hailed as the world’s first color e-paper monitor. E Ink technology has long been associated with e-reader devices such as the Kindle or the Kobo. However, the advent of the Bigme B13 marks a new chapter — this time in the world of portable color e-paper monitors. The device is designed to bring the comfort of paper-like viewing into productivity and multitasking setups.

A Paper-Like Display for Work and Study

The B13 comes with a 13.3-inch Kaleido 3 color e-Paper screen having a crisp 3200 × 2400 pixels resolution. Text appears sharp at 300 PPI in black-and-white, while color content gets displayed at 150 PPI pixel density. Unlike traditional LCD or OLED panels that emit bright backlight directly into your eyes, the e-Paper screen has none of that and hence causes almost zero eye strain. This makes it ideal for use by those who have to spend long hours in front of the screen reading documents, editing text, or browsing the web.

However, while the e-paper monitor supports touch, it requires a USB connection to enable it. When using a USB-C video connection, the touchscreen will work right away. When connected using HDMI video, you will also have to connect using a USB data cable to the monitor to enable touch functionality.

The monitor also supports multiple modes to optimize performance

These are preset modes which you can select according to the content you are viewing.

  • Text mode is best suited for viewing or editing a document
  • Web mode, which offers smooth scrolling
  • Image mode offers the best color effect and is hence ideal for viewing images or working with them.
  • Video mode is when the refresh rate is at its highest and offers smooth motion handling effects.

A 30Hz refresh rate ensures smoother playback compared to older e-Paper panels. There is also a one-tap refresh button, which you can make good use of to get rid of the ghosting effect instantly.

Flexible Connectivity and Wireless Streaming

The Bigme B13 offers plug-and-play support for connecting with laptops, desktops, and smartphones. Connection can be established using USB-C or HDMI, while there are also wireless options like AirPlay, Miracast, and DLNA available for seamless casting. This way, you can easily connect the monitor to devices running Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS platforms.

Other convenient features the monitor comes with include built-in dual speakers and a headphone jack. This makes it easy to make video calls or go for light multimedia use without requiring external accessories.

Portable and Adjustable Design

The Bigme B13 is a highly portable device, weighing just 660 grams and measuring 6 mm at its thinnest point. That does not come at the expense of durability, as the aluminum alloy build offers excellent rigidity. Its asymmetric design, where you have a thicker bottom portion that tapers off towards the top, provides stability on flat surfaces.

There is also an optional magnetic stand, which allows for a dual-screen setup. The stand fits laptops between 13 and 17 inches and supports both portrait and landscape orientations. Users can also switch between same-screen mirroring and split-screen functionality, turning multiple monitors into one extended workspace.

Added Comfort Features

The B13 comes with a front light feature with adjustable warm and brightness settings. This way, you can opt to illuminate the screen with a warm yellow glow or cool white, depending on whether you are viewing the screen at night or in the daytime. You can also turn off the front light completely when there is sufficient ambient light present.

Price and Availability

The Bigme B13 was launched earlier in April this year, but it is only now that it is available to buy online. Priced at $699, buyers can currently save 15 percent at the Bigme Store with the promotional code B13SAVE.
