The Amazon Kindle e-readers now boast a new ‘Spacing’ feature that is aimed at offering users a more personalised reading experience. You can choose from three options under the Spacing setting – Paragraph Spacing, Character Spacing, and Word Spacing. The spacing options are going to be applicable for all reading materials, which include Kindle books as well as those that you have sideloaded onto the Kindle. The Spacing settings are available under the font adjustment menu.
The new Spacing options are, however, going to be available only on the devices that run the latest software version 5.18.3. It has been just about a week since Amazon introduced the new update. The changelog didn’t mention anything specific that the new software would bring along. This makes it a pleasant surprise to see the new feature being part of the latest update. The update is applicable only to the 11th and 12th gen Kindle devices, the Kindle Colorsoft, and the Kindle Scribe.
That means older Kindles or even the Kindle Paperwhite are missing out on the new feature. What is also known is that the new feature is only available to Kindle users in the United States. Maybe Amazon is keen to iron out all issues, if any, before it is made available to every region where Amazon operates. Needless to say, users of the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Oasis too will also like to see the update made available to them.
However, as the eBook Reader Blog observed, there is no way you can select a negative range as is available with some e-book reader applications. That said, the introduction of the new spacing feature is a welcome addition, one that can enhance the reading experience all the more. Maybe Amazon will introduce means to change the margin spacing as well in another update sometime in the future.
